Toledo's Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is especially beautiful in the Spring. At this time
of year, the cemetery is alive with color. Within its historic, wrought iron gates,
you'll find 160 acres of rolling lawns, blossoming shrubs, colorful plantings,
a picturesque lake, and more than 300 species of mature trees. We invite you to
enjoy a pleasant Spring drive through this peaceful, park-like setting, which
is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a nationally recognized arboretum.
Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place of 65,000 individuals including
many of Toledo's most prominent families. More than 130 years old, the cemetery
still includes 47 acres of undeveloped land and continues to be an active cemetery
with more than ample space for its next 130 years.
Founded in 1876, the development of Woodlawn Cemetery paralleled the growth of Toledo
for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Although Woodlawn
was considered an outstanding example of the "rural cemetery movement" when it's gates first opened, the city's expansion gradually transformed it into
a quiet natural retreat well within the city limits.
Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is one of the finest arboretums in northwest Ohio. Its many
wooded acres also provide a nesting habitat for a rich variety of birds. Woodlawn contains many architectural landmarks including the area's most extensive collection
of private mausoleums, which are part of the rich history that attracts genealogists
and history buffs to the cemetery.
We welcome you to our website. Whether your interest is local history, architecture,
genealogy or nature, you will find a wealth of information here. The site is also

web visit and encourage you to come to Historic Woodlawn Cemetery in person for
a full appreciation of its tranquil beauty.
