Welcome to
Historic Woodlawn Cemetery
Summer is a time of tranquil beauty at Toledo's Historic Woodlawn
Cemetery. Within this nationally recognized arboretum, more than 300 varieties
of mature trees provide ample shade during the warm, summer months. Historic
Woodlawn Cemetery, which is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places, is the final resting place of 65,000 individuals including
many of Toledo's most prominent families.
Celebrating more than 130 years of service, the cemetery still includes 50 acres
of undeveloped land and continues to be an active cemetery with more than ample
space for its next 130 years. Founded in 1876, the development of Woodlawn Cemetery
paralleled the growth of Toledo for much of the late nineteenth and early twentieth
century. Although Woodlawn was considered an outstanding example of the "rural
cemetery movement" when
it's gates first opened, the city's expansion gradually transformed it into a
quiet natural retreat well within the city limits. In
addition to the more than 300 species of trees found at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery,
its 160 verdant, wooded acres provide a nesting habitat to a rich variety of
birds.
Woodlawn contains many architectural landmarks including the area's most extensive
collection of private mausoleums, which are part of the rich history that attracts
genealogists and history buffs to the cemetery.
