Historic Woodlawn
Cemetery added to
National Register of Historic Places
The National Park Service, United States Department of the Interior awarded
Woodlawn this honor late in 1998. Woodlawn was nominated in connection with a
state plan to identify and document prehistoric and historic places in Ohio which
qualify for National Register status under the provisions of the National Historic
Preservation Act of 1966. The National Register is the nation's official list
of places which should be preserved because of their significance in America's
history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. Since Woodlawn's
beginning in 1876, the cemetery has been known as a burial place for families
of both local and national prominence.
Even before the cemetery's nomination and election as a National Historic Place,
your Board of Trustees had plans in place to restore and preserve the history
and natural beauty which is unique at Woodlawn. Several years ago, a capital fund
drive was initiated and funds raised are being used to improve the grounds, bridges
and roads. Large and small contributions continue to be donated and are not only
welcome, but are even more important now that the National Historic Register status
is a reality.
Woodlawn is a very busy and active cemetery and your board intends to keep
it well positioned to grow and serve our community throughout the next millennium.
Woodlawn is known in the area as a great bird watching site, a terrific arboretum,
and now a Historic Place. Congratulations Woodlawn!
