Historic Woodlawn is more than 130 years old. It was the cemetery of choice for Toledo's civic, professional, and industrial leaders during the city's Golden Age of growth during the late 19th and 20th centuries.

Historic Woodlawn was founded during the Rural Cemetery Movement. Cemeteries designed during this period featured a park-like atmosphere. The developers strived to carefully place markers, tree plantings, and roadways to ensure that they best complemented the natural landscape.

Who authorized us to call the cemetery Historic Woodlawn?

Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Park Service administers the Register.

Is Woodlawn a "living" cemetery?

Absolutely. Almost 1/3 of the total acreage of Historic Woodlawn Cemetery - 50 of the total 160 acres are undeveloped and still available. This is projected to accommodate growth for the next 130 years.

Why do we say Woodlawn is a place of natural beauty?

Historic Woodlawn Cemetery is a nature lover's paradise. It is an arboretum with over 300 species of trees and is also the seasonal home of more than 208 confirmed varieties of birds found in the Toledo area.

Is Historic Woodlawn the final resting place of American military veterans?

Approximately 5,500 Civil War veterans are buried at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. The Woodlawn Veterans Memorial Day Association hosts an annual Memorial Day ceremony for military veterans and places more than 2,000 flags on veterans' graves. The public is invited to attend this ceremony.

Does Historic Woodlawn offer special treatment for fallen veterans and their spouses?

Yes. Historic Woodlawn Cemetery has designated Section 23V exclusively for the interment of fallen veterans and their spouses. The cemetery offers a package when making pre-need arrangements.

Historic Woodlawn is famous for its unique collection of private, family mausoleums. How many of these structures are there?

There are 42 private family mausoleums at Woodlawn. Some date back to the 1880s.
